A TALE OF TWO CHINAS

The breakneck pace at which China has developed over the last twenty-five years, especially in an area so large and so geographically diverse, was bound to open up large contrasts between regions, worker classes, enterprises, generations, etc. Yet, the economic progress achieved has been nothing short of remarkable, both in size and in steadiness, and the benefits have been widely shared by China’s population. At a time when talk of more reforms and further liberalization is surfacing again, one may wonder how adaptable to change the country has remained.
