  • J. Dale Harvey, Portfolio Manager

    J. Dale Harvey, Portfolio Manager

    Prior to joining Tocqueville in 2025, Dale Harvey was the founder and CEO of Poplar Forest Capital since 2007. Before starting Poplar Forest Capital, Mr. Harvey spent 16 years with The Capital Group Companies, where he was a portfolio counselor managing approximately $20 billion in client assets at the time of his resignation for several of the American Funds mutual fund sub accounts.

    During his tenure at American Funds, Mr. Harvey managed, at various times, the value components of the American Balanced Fund, American Mutual Fund, Blue Chip Growth & Income Fund, Investment Company of America, SMALLCAP World Fund, and Washington Mutual Investors Fund.

    In addition to his leadership of Poplar Forest, Dale serves as portfolio manager for the Partners Strategy and co-portfolio manager for the firm’s Large Cap Value, Mid Cap Value, and Balanced Strategies.

    Dale earned a Master of Business Administration with honors from Harvard University in 1991, and a B.S. in Commerce with honors from the University of Virginia in 1987.

Formed in September 2007, the Poplar Forest Team provides active investment management to select individual, intermediary, and institutional investors. Our mission is to achieve superior risk adjusted returns, net of fees and taxes, over full market cycles by investing in underappreciated companies and industries.

We believe that the best investment opportunities often go overlooked by the majority of investors. Market participants tend to move as a herd, but we look purposefully in a different direction and search for great ideas among the companies and industries most other investors ignore. We believe that selectively constructing portfolios of undervalued businesses may increase potential returns while also limiting risks. Our approach can feel uncomfortable at times, but clients choose us because they believe – as we do – that price matters.
